The Story Behind Jumé

A Family Tradition in Leather
The story of Jumé doesn't begin with founder Juul van der Meerakker — it begins generations earlier. Her father and grandfather were leather goods specialists in the heart of Eindhoven. On the Rechtestraat, wallets, belts and the iconic school bags were handcrafted for decades.
As a child, Juul literally grew up surrounded by leather. The scent of freshly cut hide, the sound of sewing machines, the patience needed for every stitch — it was in her blood from an early age.
From Atelier to Her Own Brand
At sixteen, Juul was already working side by side with her father in the atelier. What began as helping after school grew into a serious education in leather craftsmanship. She developed into a bag designer and maker, with a keen eye for detail and a deep respect for the craft.
The inspiration for her own collection came at a surprisingly everyday moment: friends complaining about the lack of stylish, functional bags that truly suited their lives. Juul knew she could do it differently — and better.
Craftsmanship in a Modern World
In 2010, Juul founded Atelier Jumé. No mass production, no outsourcing to faraway factories. Every bag is handmade in her own atelier in Eindhoven, from premium Kenyan leather that only becomes more beautiful over the years.
In an era where virtually all leather production has moved abroad, Juul proves that Dutch craftsmanship is still very much alive. Her bags are more than accessories — they are heirlooms in the making.
